Lotus Notes, Google Calendar, Google Sync, and my Blackberry Bold -- making me more proficient?

01/04/2009 12:47:50 AM by Chris Toohey

Google Sync As part of my New Year's Resolution, I'm planning on using the tools that I have available to me to become more proficient in my day to day. See - I'm tired of "working harder", and want to "work smarter"! One of the first steps is to use my Lotus Notes calendar to manage my life. The problem is, life doesn't often happen (or need me to manage it) while I'm solely at my laptop. This is where my Blackberry Bold comes in, as it allows me to manage things while on the go! This, however, only lets me meet half of my need, as the majority of my schedule deals with people or events outside of my Lotus Notes environment. (Trying) to meet that need, I'm using a product from Google called Google Sync. It allows me to synchronize my Blackberry Bold calendar (which is actually my Lotus Notes calendar) and my Blackberry Address Book (which is already synchronized with my Lotus Notes Personal Address Book) with their Google counterparts.

So far, no complaints! I'm able to access my calendar and contacts while in Lotus Notes, on my Bold, etc. as well as delegate/provide access to non-Lotus Notes collaborators (such as my wife).

If you use a Blackberry and the Google Calendar and Address Book services, I'd definitely recommend checking Google Sync out!

I was thinking the Google sync was a superfluous part of the picture until i read "as well as delegate/provide access to non-Lotus Notes collaborators (such as my wife).

I think I'll have to add that this year as well.

Here's my problem...

I tell my wife, "Here... I created a bookmark on the browser for my calendar."
Her response, "Why can't you just write it on the calendar hanging on the fridge?"
My response, "I can't update quickly enough... Why don't you try Google Calendar? That way, we can keep track of each other's calendars."
Her response, "Oh, that's too much work..."

This is why I drink...

I haven't tried it in a while, but had big issues with repeating entries and invitations using Google Sync & Lotus Calendaring.

I have an additional twist to this.

I have a personal Berry using my gmail and Google calendar. I have the Google Sync on my Berry and that seems to work well.

Now I'm consulting in a Domino shop and would love to have my Domino calendar included on my berry. Merging the calendars one-way to my Berry would be fine.

Any thoughts how I could do this?

@Yancy: Exactly ;-)

@Ray: Yeah, that was my wife's reaction as well... but she's getting a lot better in that regard to using cloud solutions for the day-to-day.

@Luis: Haven't really run into anything all-that-major with the meetings support, but I'll admit that I'm not a hard-core C&S poweruser.

@John: I don't think there's a solution on the market today that would allow you to connect to a Lotus Notes calendar and view said calendar if you aren't already connected via enterprise activation to that Domino environment. I could be wrong though...

My gut is telling me that you *might* be able to load some 3rd-party "secondary calendar" application on the Blackberry device that would read an iCal stream or something, and then modify the mail template to export all of your calendar entries into iCal format. You could go a few ways with this, either having an externally-accessible Domino server serve the ical stream (as it sounds like read-only could work for you) or having a Scheduled Agent create said iCal stream and post said stream as an XML file to an external web server that your device would read from/download/etc.

Those are my gut-check thoughts on the matter though, and please consider that I am not a Blackberry expert!

@Scott: A response to you - sir - deserved it's own post! ;-)

This assumes that your blackberry is connected to the Enterprise Notes.

How would you do it, if your blackberry was not connected to notes?

Hello Chris,

It sounds like you are doing what I am trying to do! On the reverse side, I am encouraging my husband to do online calendars.

I recently purchased a Blackberry Storm and used it exclusively for personal use until I was recently granted access to our BES to get my Lotus Notes information on my blackberry.

This is what I use:

  • Blackberry Storm
  • Lotus Notes R65
  • eProductivity
  • GoogleCalendar (multiple calendars)
  • GoogleSync
  • Remember the Milk (RTM)
  • MilkSync

My only problems have been that calendar entries created via GoogleCalendar are not flagged as private by default. If I flag it as private it is displayed as 'busy' for my husband. He is not happy about that! If it is not PRIVATE, it is available for display to others in my department via our 'Department Calendar' product.

Since I use RTM to manage my personal tasks, I found out the hard way that RTM was syncing ALL of my work tasks (i.e. actions) and initially there were duplicates. To clear up my Task list, I changed them to complete. This sync'd back to eProductivity and I thought that I lost them all. It looks like I was able to mark them incomplete and bring them back.

Any suggestions on privacy of entries? or choosing which Google Calendars you would like to sync back to Lotus Notes. Perhaps I am missing some type of an option?

Hi,

If you are interested in synchronizing your Google and Lotus Notes calendars directly, you can try the AweSync tool. It's available in beta, and you are welcome for beta testing.
