I agree the overall concept to place a Notes form into the sidebar is quite powerful. However i don't yet understand the real benefit in creating a sidebar panel to enter remote console commands via this method. If all i need to do is quickply sending a few console commands to my Domino servers, i usually call the built-in remote server console via a Smarticon. This allows me to actually see the server output and even switch to live console mode if needed, all without launching the Domino admin client or the separate jconsole.exe.

    Hey Erik,
I hear ya! The SmartIcon is a great entry point - if also not a more complete method - for Remote Console Commands... but this zippy little application serves multiple masters while providing the potential for multiple functions:

    1. It's a great, simple, easy-to-follow example of a Lotus Notes-based Sidebar Widget.
    2. It showcases programmatic access to the Remote Console.
    3. It can easily be ported to web or mobile clients - allowing Remote Console submissions securely "on the road".

While it's v0.2... I've been thinking about what can go into v0.3 that would really make this application useful. Some of those ideas include:

    • Read-restriction (via Readers field logic) to Servers in the UI check-list.
    • As mentioned, creating Web and Mobile client UIs.
    • Providing a "locked-down" option, allowing only "defined" functions to be issued from the UI.
    • Better transaction logging.

So just some of the things I have tooling around in my head, but going back to your comment and really addressing the question: I really wrote SOTU to address a personal requirement (an Admin needed to issue a single Console command across multiple servers). It's release is more "if it helps at least one other person out there.."
